can't you see the sunshine….

Entertaining in the time of the virus

We have always regularly had folks over to share a meal. And when we moved back to North Carolina that became even more important. I will admit, my invitations come with a small handiman event. In other words…”Oh, I’m so glad you are here. You know since you are here, could you tighten up this door?” Or help me get this down. Or ….

Now, all that has stopped! Only our HVAC guy has been in the house for routine maintenance since March. Ben sat in the parking lot when the repair guy was here. I really missed seeing folks and chatting in person. Finally, I worked out that we could sit on the deck and guests could sit in the courtyard. We could have a drink and a chat. Works well.

These are our friends, Roy and Marcia. They live nearby. Until it got so hot, they have been coming over on Sunday night for a couple hours. It is good for all of us.

And then we had surprise visitors, Jim and Carol, friends from Maryland who were passing through. And their dog to visit with Guppy. She was so excited!

I don’t think I would go that far, but everyone is told before arriving “You are not getting in the house to use the bathroom. I suggest the nearby Harris-Teeter grocery.” You know what this means though…..I don’t have to clean before folks come over!!!!!!!

I’m exhausted

Guest Post: by Guppy, The Lucky Dog 3

She Who Must Be Obeyed is always on my case about writing my blog post. I just thought I would get ahead.

Man, these two people of mine are so needy. Every morning I have to sit in My Ben’s lap and make sure he knows how much I love him. And then I have to be watchful and protect them all day long. SQUIRRELS are EVERYWHERE!

Finally, they went away today, May 22. I haven’t been alone since the first bit of March. Some nights, when they have gotten on my last nerve, I go upstairs to my room for a few minutes every night. But then I come right back down. I mean someone has to look after them. They, like, sit up watching TV until 1 or so every night. Really! Don’t these people know how important sleeping 12 to 14 hours is……

So today, they went away. Oh gee thanks, the sun was just pouring in to my guard tower space. And she had not turned the cool air up. It was like ‘roasted dawg’. I was like happy and all when they came back but I had to take a major nap under the cool air just as soon as I could.

I hope they don’t go away again anytime soon.

What will they do next

Guest Post: By Guppy, The Lucky Dog 3

She Who Must Be Obeyed says I have to write a post before I can go sit outside. REALLY! I’m kind’ gettin’ tired of them bein’ around all the time. It has made me feel more secure so I’m not droppin’ as much hair as I used to.

We haven’t been doin’ too much different than normal except they don’t go anywhere. I mean, sometimes She will go out for a little bit. But I haven’t sat up on my perch at the front windows in I don’t know how long. I stay with Ben when She goes out. And I still sit in his lap every morning to check how he is doin’ and all.

There have been some big storms. And one night those evil squirrels sat up in the trees and threw all kinds of limbs and stuff down.

She is doin’ all this gardenin’ and spring stuff. Draggin’ things out. Into my space.

And now this week they have started goin’ to exercise classes on ZOOM whatever that is.

I tell you, it’s just embarrassing. Watchin’ these old people dancin’ around. They laugh and sing….. She says that is one of the places that they used to go to. She says they are goin’ to be doin’ these classes online until JUNE!!!!!! Oh, I just don’t know. Oh well, I’m gonna post this so I can sit on the deck now. Stay calm and kepp your paws clean.

Well, have you been doing anything?

My goodness, yes!

I like to bat my ideas around for a bit before I take action on them. After I finished mounting and displaying some of my Mother’s jewelry I realized my Father had a lot too. You can revisit the post about my Mother’s jewelry here

I found that my Father had a collection of gold basketballs that he was awarded as the coach of a city league basketball team. These are just too cute. Some made by Josten and some made by Balfour.

I was showing these to our friends Pat and Debby and their comments made me realize that since I had so many of them I needed to show them with movement, rather than just mounted. It took a long time before I came up with the idea to make ‘graphic novel’ mounts. It took even longer to find the right size canveses. I found these great little canvases at our Dollar store. So here it is

These are hung on the opposite side of the windows from my Mother’s jewelery.

My assistant, passed out from over work.

That left all my Father’s US Army insignia and medals. Those small canvases were just what I needed and they would fit perfectly under the window.

I’m real pleased with how these have turned out. It is nice to be able to see things from my parents each night before I go to sleep.

And I have been knitting. Most of my knitting is donated. I don’t knit anything complicated. But I added these little bows to this scarf which makes it just a little bit different. A little more ‘girly’.

Stay safe. Go wash your hands and keep your paws clean.

You might remember this first iris I saw in February. It is around the corner from us.

And at the corner of our courtyard are these Dutch iris. They always bloom early.

I have some bearded iris in the front that I have seperated and expanded in to the canna area. They have done very well.

They are HUGE! The stalks are at least 3′ and full of buds.

There are lots of buds. So unless hail or wind damages them they should look nice for another week or so. Duke Energy has already called to chit chat about the storm expected here late Sunday or early Monday. (You know, in case I don’t have enough to worry about….) We’ll see what happens.

Ben and I will be celebrating quietly on Sunday. Guppy was overjoyed when I brought in a ham on Thursday. She doesn’t think she’ll want a sweet potato though. Tonight I am having a some fizzy pink wine to celebrate my Father’s birthday and the end of LENT. Not that I observe it but Ben does. You know how he makes the big sacrifice of not eating meat on Fridays during Lent, so that he can eat $20 a pound seafood instead. I eat very little seafood so some Fridays I end up making two different meals. Some Fridays he gets to have just vegetables. HA! Anyway, have a safe and Happy Easter/Passover. Wear your mask and wash your hands.

It's a dog's world

Guest Post: By Guppy, the Lucky Dog 3

She Who Must Be Obeyed has tried to explain it to me. I don’t much care about the whys or hows, I just know that She and My Ben are home! Like all the time. It is so wonderful!

The wetaher has turned nice so when they start to get on my nerves I can sit on the deck.

She says I have invented a game. Every morning I sit outside to watch my sweet little birds having their breakfast. That nasty squirrel tries to horn in on their breakfast. I wait until that nasty squirrel gets comfortable and then I ‘fake’ lunge at it. Ohhhhh, that nasty squirrel runs off. It is so fun. I settle down and we do it all over again. She says that the dog they had in Italy, Nerone, (I think he was The Lucky Dog 2) played almost the same game with the chickens. She seems to like it that I play this game.

And thank goodness all that silly basketball has ended. I am finally able to take a decent nap without She getting all excited and yelling and all. So I don’t know all the whys and whatevers. I do know, Keep Calm unless you are faking out a nasty squirrel and keep your paws clean!

I really like sitting and watching all the birds that come to my feeder

There is a nice variety coming to visit

The bluebirds are coming back all the time.

This little woodpecker comes by every now and then. There is also a pair of doves that visit. I’m real tickled about all of them. But I have to say, I didn’t know they would eat sooooo much. Kind of cutting into my toy money.

They are at it again!

Guest Post: By Guppy, the Lucky Dog 3

Really! I just want to have a nice quiet weekend and She Who Must Be Obeyed starts moving everything around!

Well, I just plopped down and hoped She won’t mess with me.

I guess that didn’t work. Look, the big bed is gone and my bed has gotten crammed over here in this little corner. Really! How am I supposed to relax. And then…

Oh, it was almost too much. She opened up a can of duck. Who knew duck comes in a can!!!! It smelled so good. And then there was fresh duck too. Enough to drive me crazy!

Of course, other people came. Fortunately, people I like, but they ATE ALL THE DUCK! Oh no! I didn’t get any at all! She keeps talking about how She misses eating duck so maybe she’ll buy another one and do this again. I sure hope so.

I’m a Calendar Girl

Guest Post: Guppy, the Lucky Dog 3

She Who Must Be Obeyed made me wait to write this. I had to wait until everyone got their calendar and finally they did. Saving Grace made a fund raising calendar and I got to be part of it.

I’m in the month of May, because that is when I came to live with She and Ben. See, I’m May 5th. Pretty cool….

I was real happy to see this cartoon.

I was not happy to see this evil squirrel eating my pricy birdseed

Oh, well, one day…..

In December, I took advantage of few doctor’s appointments and a reduced exercise class schedule to try to get something done. I tackled the jewelry.

I don’t wear much jewelry. Mostly pins. Necklaces bother my neck. No matter how much I want to wear one, ten…fiften minutes on my neck and I am pulling it off. But I do have a nice collection of pins which was still more or less packed away from our move here, TWO YEARS AGO. So first I worked on a way to have my pins downstairs.

I made this out of this foam sheets. The foam has enough ‘tooth’ to hold the pins without having to fasten the closure, so they are easy to get on and off. I have been wearing them. And I just like looking at them.

Next I tackled my Mother’s collection. Not only was it my Mother’s but also some pieces from my Grandmother and another relative, Aunt Lou. There was so much jewelry that it filled a recycled copy paper carton. Keep in mind, I have had this since 2004 when I closed up my parents’ house and it moved from Florida to Northern Virginia. Then in 2007, it moved into storage in North Carolina. In 2017 it moved out of storage in to our upstairs bedroom. And I have looked at it. And looked at it. And looked at it. Paralyzed by the sheer amount of it.

Then I found this book in our library.

by Jamie Lundstrom (Author)

French Vintage Décor: Easy and Elegant DIY Projects for Any Home Paperback – June 12, 2018

Which had this craft idea in it. “Old Locket on Canvas Art”

After thinking about it for a while, I realized I could pick out some of the pieces that I remember my Mother wearing and mount them the same way. And there was just some bits of wall space left to hang them on. I took advantage of the craft store sales to buy 18 small canvases. In late November I started working on mounting the jewelry. Thinking it would be easy…..HA! I didn’t want to glue or damage the jewelry so each piece needed an individual solution. All of it was made harder by the wood frame of the canvas.

It took until New Years Day for me to finish. But I finally have them mounted and hanging.

My assistant had to take a break. It has just exhausted her.

As I was doing this, I came across a post on another blog about inherited jewelry. You will have to click on another link to read her full post, but essentially it is about the writer’s Mom having picked out a piece of jewelry for her grand daughter and attaching a note to it. Out of all the jewelry, I got one note.

This is my Grandmother’s necklace. Other favorite pieces

Shoe buckles! How cool

Cameos and one of my Mother’s charm bracelets

I am really pleased with how it has turned out. I still need some help hanging them. (Beware of dinner invites. They come with ‘would you just help me do one thing…?’) And I still need to figure out what to do with the remaining jewelry…..At least I have made a start.
